Sheltered housing

Eastbourne, East Sussex

The property is located in Eastbourne and comprised purpose built sheltered housing for elderly people providing 45 studio and single bed homes over 4 floors. The building was constructed in the 1970's in concrete frame with masonry infill and cladding.

The small flats had become outdated, therefore Evolution were commissioned to remodel the building to provide 31 modern one and two bedroom flats to Lifetime Home standards. Residents could not be moved out so the design had to allow for the work to be undertaken whilst the building remained occupied, with residents being moved in phases. This presented many challenges including the separation of elderly residents and workmen, moving materials, removal of asbestos, maintaining fire routes, maintaining services, and stacking of new services. An extensive consultation exercise was undertaken with the residents and their families in respect of the design of individual flats and their concerns regarding being disturbed by the work. This consultation continued throughout the design and construction and was important in achieving a successful project.
